The affluent seaside community of La Jolla is located within the city of San Diego on the north end, occupying seven miles of curving coastline along the Pacific Ocean. La Jolla is home to about 35,000 residents, many of whom occupy some of the most expensive homes in the United States.
Dubbed the Jewel City, La Jolla proves rich in history. In the 1890s the La Jolla Railroad was built, joining La Jolla with all of San Diego and drawing large summer crowds to its sandy beaches. While the origin of the name La Jolla is questionable, the community today stands as the crown jewel of the entire region. The University of California San Diego is based in La Jolla, along with Scripps Research Institute and many other facilities of higher learning.
